Meda Couzens

Western Sydney University (Australia)

Is a children’s rights researcher and lecturer currently based at the School of Law, Western Sydney University, Australia. She is also a research fellow with the School of Law, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where she taught previously. Meda brings to the Network a rich academic and professional experience acquired in developed and developing countries, common law and civil law legal systems. She worked as a prosecutor in Romania, then in the NGO sector in South Africa, and thereafter as an academic in South Africa and Australia. Meda has written about children’s rights from a variety of perspectives, including international law, constitutional law, family law, human rights law and administrative law. Meda is a keen comparativist and has researched children’s rights in Australia, France, Myanmar, Romania, South Africa and Tanzania. She is looking forward to exploring new legal systems.

Meda studied Law in Romania, and has legal and inter-disciplinary postgraduate degrees from universities in Romania, the UK and South Africa. She holds a PhD in Law from the University of Leiden. Her thesis is a study of the application of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child by domestic courts in selected jurisdictions.
